Over-The-Phone Help
In general this is not something I do. I make exceptions for clients – questions and/or advice – but my business model is onsite support. But most of all; I have found Apple’s own phone support to be very good most of the time. The number is 1-800-SOS-APPLE.
Hi, Ben
Just wrote you a long email on here which somehow disappeared when I went to look up the name of a website for you (you’ll see below).
Well, let me try again.
I am a friend of Judy Marlow’s, who speaks very highly of you. I have this old imac G-5, and I’m interested in fixing it, if you think it’s worth it. Here are the specs:
Hardware Overview:
Model Name: iMac G5
Model Identifier: PowerMac8,2
Processor Name: PowerPC G5 (3.0)
Processor Speed: 2 GHz
Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 512 KB
Memory: 2 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: 5.2.5f1
Serial Number (system): QP5410AMSDW
Sales Order Number: Z0C000005
My son, Buddy, received this computer as his “wish” from the “make-a-wish” foundation when he was 14 or so; he is 21 now (he was born with kidney failure, and has a kidney transplant, in case you’re wondering
He has long since moved on from this computer, and now I have inherited it and have been using it for about a year. In some ways it’s great, but there are a few problems, such as 1) I can’t “stream” anything, radio or video, or it will cause the computer to either shut down completely or go into sleep mode, and 2) the “word” program is not working, so I can only use “text edit” (however, Buddy recently found his original word cd installer disc, so maybe that could be fixed, although he thinks it has already been used, so can’t be used again…).
I’m (we’re) on a fixed income, me, because of receiving no child support in my divorce and ovarian cancer in ’97 and he, because of kidney transplant, so I would like to ask you about the possibility of a reduced rate for your work (after the initial $125). We are both at the point where we are exploring ways to get off of SSI and SSD, but neither of us are there yet (he is in Community College here locally and hopes to go on to a 4-year school). I’m very interested in Kundalini Yoga, and would like to teach it, but for that I would need a very good system for playing all sorts of music very easily and portably, so maybe would need to explore either 1) fixing (also Buddy’s old) ipod or maybe an ipad system of some sort, I don’t know.
Anyway, I would love for you to look at the computer and see if you think it is viable (and affordable) to fix, or whether you think I need to move on. (oh, also recently I had to start opening gmail in HTML for slow connections, even though I have a fast internet service). If not, maybe you could advise me re: buying a refurbished mac from a place like “gainsaver” (which I found online) or maybe from a place you know.
Really appreciate you getting back to me – phone is fine (908 752 9992) or you can email me at corrinacorrina22@gmail.com.
Thanks, and hope you had a nice vacation! (I called while you were gone
Sincerely,
Dorothy Deitz
Dorothy, enjoyed meeting you. Hope your Mac is happier. The details you outlined in your note were helpful.
